Baze is correct. It involves a change in aircraft type on a continuing flight. Classic example is UA 1. Until next April, UA 1 is operated on a 762 on JFK-LAX and a 744 LAX-HKG. If someone booked a trip for JFK-HKG on UA 1, then they would have a change of guage at LAX.
