Change of gauge does apply to a change of plane and is used, I think, when the same flight number applies to an itinerary which requires an intermediate stop and change of equipment, but not a new flight number. Last summer I flew from IAD-ORD-NRT and the flight number was the same for each segment, but we changed equipment in ORD.
