It's the only supermarket I've ever visited where it appeared to be a common practice for customers to load up their carts willy nilly but only decide what they actually want to buy after they get to the registers--putting the stuff they've decided not to buy on the floor next to the registers. Bizarre.
It has to do with seeing what the total cost of the groceries will be and what they can actually spend on groceries that week/month. As they realize they're over budget they start taking things out until they get to the magic number.

To the OP, I used to use the 125th station all the time when I lived on the UES. The area is becoming much more gentrified and safe, particularly on 125th. The one addiitional comment I'll offer is to avoid listening to an iPod or any other behavior that might make you appear as though you are not paying a lot of attention to your surroundings (and actually DO pay attention to your surroundings). There was an uptick in robberies of folks in the area a few months back - not enough to really be worried about - but the common theme seemed to be that they were all listening to music and not really paying attention to what was going on around them.
