Another perspective on this...

I was talking to a long time employee at a plain jane HI (18 years) and he knows most of the staff quite well - with the housekeeping group being the exception. Reason being that most of them were temps, immigrants actually, who could barely speak English. To save on money, they "dropped" from cleaning 15 rooms a day to wanting them to clean 30 rooms a day spending no more than 15 mins on each room. They were told to only vacuum when it "looked like it needed it" and linens were only changed every 3 days (I know, I know, they are all moving to that with the linens), ash trays weren't emptied. The hotel really lost its touch quickly.

For $10/night more, I switched to a Crowne Plaza and I'm much happier now. But I do agree, the standards of housekeeping have gone WAY downhill.
