It's the only supermarket I've ever visited where it appeared to be a common practice for customers to load up their carts willy nilly but only decide what they actually want to buy after they get to the registers--putting the stuff they've decided not to buy on the floor next to the registers. Bizarre.
We tend to go to the Pathmark below the Manhattan Bridge when we do major shopping which doesn't involve a drive to the burbs. I've never seen that practice you described above in that supermarket.
