I'm afraid I do not know what fare class they use for award tickets, my understanding is that it is a revenue class and not an award class, which means that there is usually better availability.

OT: Another thread mentioned that there was no F class award inventory available between Dubai and Sydney, but this may only have been on the direct route. It's also possible that it differs depending upon the country of origin.

And to corroborate what Mogensen says, I purchased miles on the internet and called up to make the award booking almost immediately.
