I absolutely REFUSE to pay an ATM surcharge

but I can see that is going to be difficult as it does not appear that any of the top 10 mainland banks have ATMs in Maui (i.e. NO Citibank, NO Chase, NO Wells Fargo, NO Bank of America, etc.) and there are only 2 Moneypass machines, both at taco stands in Oahu.
The co-op network website suggests that the ATM at Longhi's in Lahaina may be surcharge free but I'll believe it when I see it as I have yet to find a free-standing non-bank ATM without a charge (how else would they make money?)
Query: Do you need a debit card to get cash at Longs and grocery stores, or will a regular ATM card work? Also, any clue on the per transaction limit for Longs and Foodland?
Short of that I guess I'll be packing a lot of cash or perhaps fee-free travelers cheques though I haven't used the latter in years.
