I know its of little consolation now, and doesn't address the staffing issues ... but I always recommend that people check in online whenever feasible. It gives you a buffer for those times when you're running behind.. and in your case, whatever issue that prompted the kiosk to send you to an agent might have been handled over the phone. (Or let you know that you needed to allow extra time at the airport)
