A friend of mine just got back from an overland trip from BKK to SIN and he was most impressed with Malaysia including Penang and Cameron Highlands (been 25 years since I've been there). He prefers the prevalence of "locals", nature, good local food, and good value for money in these areas over the luxury resorts of the coast.
