As part of my job I spend a great deal of time on trading floors around the world training traders and brokers. I have been cursed at, directly, in more languages than I care to remember.
Of course, no one deserves to be cursed at and I believe the OP realized that what he said was in bad taste. But a true customer service professional diffuses a volitile situation, not escalates it. Taking the OP's story at face value, it seems that is just what the FA did.
