I agree with those who recommend the refundable ticket. It works.
I find it very hard to believe that in mid-September, a February UA flight departing SAN is already completely sold out. I'm skeptical.
Anyway, as others have said, it need not be the same flight. Book a refundable ticket SAN-Somewhere on UA for an hour or two after your actual SAN-MIA flight. Your new girlfriend gets into the secured area with her new refundable ticket and uses her actual photo ID. Then you board with the award ticket boarding pass that you printed at home online.
And yes, a refundable ticket is exactly that: REFUNDABLE. Even if you don't cancel before the flight departs.
