carry on baggage storage with Aer Lingus (other companies..?)

Last Wednesday I was on a DUB-AMS-DUB and on Thursday a DUB-MUC-DUB, I travel light with only small carryon piece, but interestingly...on each leg of both flights, the cabin crew announced that as the flights were full, passengers should ensure that their carry on luggage fitted into the overhead bins and if not, they would be able to have it stored in the belly hold area (my words)

On each leg, I was seated in one of the first 3 rows of each days flights. And guess what....the cabin crews bags were taking up a lot of the room in the first 3 rows overhead bins

I notice this happening a lot with EI, is this normal and does it happen with other carriers too. Why cabin crew need such large bags for at most, 2 return trips a day is beyond me. Although I do notice that the bags are taken down just after the food and drink cart goes back to the galley
