They have been trying to close it for a few years, and even came close I think it was last year (?). But as these things go some judge ruled against the closing, so it's still operating. But when BBI opens, it's supposed to be gone. They're also trying to figure out what to do with the giant Nazi-era terminal building - one of the universities was supposed to move in, but that fell through.
Supposedly, the definite end will be in 2008, though there are still people who are hoping against hope that the airport will remain open.
The building is a bit of a problem - it's a landmark. There are a number of developers that would love to tear it down for some project or other, but that's not going to happen. And there's not really all that much you can do with it besides use it as an airport terminal.
