Must admit have got P***ed off with BAs Exec club as increasingly difficult to use points outside of Europe. Am now trying silverjet for the first time later this month.
That route is notoriously hard to redeem points on - this has been touched on over and over again on these forums. If the award availability isn't there then it ain't gonna happen.
Question. Was your friends flight a BA flight on BA metal ? If not then he's out of luck anyway AFAIK.
WRT your last point I can think of several longhaul routes where redemption is not problematic: NYC, NRT to name but two. As ever, it requires one to be organised and book in advance (except, perhaps, NYC) - but then that's another matter.
