Firstly, was the reason for canx within their control? If it was (you'd have to ask them), then the following applies:

• meals and refreshments, hotel accommodation when necessary (including
transfers) and communication facilities.

The airline may also have to compensate you, at the same level as for denied
boarding, unless it gives you sufficient advance notice. You shall be informed
about alternative transport.
Refunds may be in cash,by bank transfer or cheque or, with your signed
agreement, in travel vouchers, and must be paid within 7 days.
So, I guess you could debate whether they ever offered you a choice or not (of refund vs. alternative) but, for once, I'd say they did all they need to here: they got you alternative transport to your destination and gave you advance notice (a text at 2am which you can deal with as soon as you wake up, on a route packed full of flights is something I'd consider good notice - though I am not sure how the 'rules' define this). Did they offer you hotels/refreshment? Not needed at 2am when you're not stranded at the airport. Did they "inform" you about alternative transport? I would (almost) bet that if you'd checked MMB it would list the new LH flight there - that is my experience. Either way, you say they resolved the issue of you having paid yourself anyway so I guess it's moot. Not only that, they gave you some free miles on top too. I would say you are ahead of the game here and have no cause for complaint.
