I would drive to FRA. The rental company may charge you even with a fee...
But watch the entrance to the rental return ... it's easy to miss ... and the bloody German drivers (not only the taxis) are chasing you near FRA (to get their plane)

I have never driven THIS route (but have had Staus near Mainz), always stayed on A-6 and then took the Autobahn (there are actually two, may be 3) to FRA North of Mannheim
