They don't check ID at the gate. You could get past security w/o ID (as mentioned above), or get a gate pass if you have a club membership, or purchase a fully refundable ticket.
You could also call the airline and see if for a change fee they could reissue the ticket. IDK about UA, but on CO the fees are less for Award tickets and decrease with status.
Wondering if the OP has called mileage plus reservations and pleaded that the ticketed person cannot go because of an "emergency" so may I please change this to another person??
