When I traveled on business, the trips were on short notice. On legacies, you could get preassigned a back middle seat.

On WN, you could check in on-line the day before and get an A pass; even if you waited a while, you could still get a B pass. Even at the end of the B group, a solo traveler should be able to find his/her choice of window or aisle (though in the back).
