UA doesn't fly 3-class domestically for "fun" or to "please us."
They do it because sometimes extra capacity is needed, the plane would otherwise sit all day doing nothing, or sometimes the aircraft needs to be positioned.
At the moment, I think capacity is the big issue. With their domestic fleet stretched pretty thin, until they can buy some more aircraft, I believe the 3-class planes will still be needed on some domestic routes.
