As I think may have been discussed here, Verizon's Blackberry 8830 has crippled GPS -- Verizon disabled it and
may enable it in the future as part of a monthly subscription add-on (big surprise). However, it is still possible to do GPS with the 8830 by using a third-party Bluetooth GPS receiver. I just got a Navibe standalone GPS receiver that works great. It's very small -- about an inch wide by 2 inches long and 1/2" thick, works on an internal lithium battery and also has a USB jack for power and charging. It locks into the satellites very, very fast -- just a matter of seconds, and works fine on my car's dashboard and even indoors near windows. The 8830 pairs with its Bluetooth in an intelligent fashion -- when you open a GPS application (either the included Maps or Google's PDA map implementation) it connects with the Navibe and displays an immediate fix. I tried driving around with it a bit today -- it tracks beautifully, just like a built-in navigation unit. The 8830 downloads maps from Google (or Verizon) and it has no trouble providing a continuance display, at least in EVDO areas (haven't tried it in other areas). It's also supposed to give voice directions, but I haven't tried that feature yet.
Oh, yes -- the Navibe was only $35 or so.
