Filters are much easier to clean dust (and worse, crud) off of than the front element of a lens. Any time spent in the 3rd world will incur oodles of photograph marking dust In this respect they do something that no lens hood ever could.

Other than that a circular polarizer. I don't use grad ND shots much anymore because they are too much of a pain to actually use.
