LOL!! I didn't realize non-Japanese people think it's "odd" eating chikuwa for breakfast... especially those yummy cheese-filled ones. I love deep-frying those cheese-filled chikuwas in tempra batter mixed with aonori.... So divine...

Anyway, if you're looking for free breakfast, try the business hotels like the other posters are suggesting. They usually include traditional Japanese breakfast in the room rate (which usually comes with rice, miso soup, nori, natto, shio-jake, etc.).

Also, if you are looking to stay in the Nagoya area, the best breakfast deals (called "morning set") are found in the city's coffee shops (kissaten), where you pay for a cup of coffee (usually around $3-5) and they will give you toast, eggs, salad, and other breakfast items for free.
