I've tried to do exactly the same as this twice (except that the connections were to GLA and EDI). On a flexible ticket (in this case a C award ticket) I had no problem standing by on an earlier flight to GLA. But on a regular (paid) Y ticket to EDI I was pretty much laughed at. Worth a try, but don't get your hopes up.
