If you had a through ticket to Belgrade then AUA has some explaining to do. If you had TWO tickets in order to save money, one to Vienna and another one Vienna to Belgrade, then I can understand their point. With two tickets, you take the risk of missing the connection in return for a cheaper flight ticket. I would not take such a risk with a 35 min connection unless I was willing to pay the price.
I had a full fare business class ticket with AUA. Even the last leg of the flight (VIE-BEG) was purchased as an OS ticket (codeshare, JU metal). And trust me, the ticket with AUA is much more expensive on the same route than with comparable airlines servicing the same cities.
