The latam fare issue, especially for Argentina, is very much a demand/supply issue. UA & AA make a small fortune on those routes, with very high average number of PAX per flight. Despite the current economic slow-down, travel is still very much in demand, especially for foreign airlines.

This is due to the fact that the national carrier (AR - Aerolineas Argentinas) is currently in a deplorable state. Also, their FFlyer program just does not measure up to international standard. Iberia's ownership just about finished killing it, and AA was in there with a minority shareholding & management contract, but they have also recently stepped aside.

As to the "primitive" remark, I could not comment impartially since I am very much a South American (and a native of Buenos Aires). In addition, I wish to come to Dawoz's defense as he did state that he was guessing... Im sure he meant no offense in his post.
