An award C ticket isn't free. It is paid for with mileage. Sure, the book-value of that mileage may very well be a lot lower than the actual revenue of the Y fare plus the book-value of the upgrade instrument... but it's certainly not "free."
(And you do pay taxes and fees, although yes, that isn't really revenue for UA.)
