If travelling with an infant on an overnight flight, I have found it best to take the bulkhed row. The crew have 'cribs' they can attach to the bulkhead for the infant to sleep in. The infant sleeps much better this way than in a seat.
Order a Bassinet in advance, I think it has weight restrictions. Next summer the child may be too large for the bassinet.
Do yourself a favor and get the child a seat. It is safer and less a bother. A lap child on a two hour flight ONCE was enough to teach me the benefit of their own seat.
