How far in advance are you booking? This should not be impossible. Also, are you trying to book UA C class or trying to get SQ? Do you have to route through Europe? The HKG->ORD direct should not be that full and there is LAX also. This all just depends on when you want to fly...

An alternative would also be to go through NRT.
