How easy is it to transit in China? Do I need to get a visa? Staying just a couple of hours only... coming in from HKG
You'll need at least 2 hours to transit in China. You do not need a visa to transit. Show the check in agent your 2nd ticket and you'll be ok.

Last time I transitted in PVG, you need to clear arrival customs. Tell the custom officier you're in transit. They'll need to see your ticket for the transit flight. You get escorted to a separate room where a supervisor stamps your passport with a transit stamp. Get your bag downstairs. Drop off at transit counter (if your airline has one) and get your new boarding pass. Go upstairs. Clear outbound customs (remember to fill in an immigration form) and finally clear security again.

This whole process took us close to 1h45m, given line ups were relatively short. FYI, it was a MU to MU transfer. I was flying HKG-PVG-YVR.
