It is POSSIBLE that if you pay at the airport you will not get the full miles and tp's or the increased baggage allowance, (these are the T&C's of an upgrade done at Gatwick) plus you will probably only have an "E" seat left to choose!!!!

Miles and TP:
I'm not too concerned about the miles and TP being a problem. I've got printouts showing the upgraded booking - and saying what it will earn in the MMB summary. And these are clearly dated before departure date.
What's concerning me more was what upgrade fare I will be paying!
- I'm concerned I might be charged a non-promotion upgrade when I get to the desk.
Therefore I intend to call BAEC tomorrow - lets see if exec club people can be any more helpful. Wasn't able to phone today.
The guy I spoke when doing the upgrade claimed the upgrade was locked at the standard 59GBP when he did the upgrade. However he was generally 'really flakey' about things, he only told me he wouldn't take payment after he'd already processed the UG. And when I asked about OLCI he was completely disinterested and didn't even want to answer.
[Actually should it be 59GBP? This is a Jersey DEPARTURE, given that (I understand) Jersey doesn't have a dept. tax premium for business pax, should this be lower (like euro out-stations)]
Seating:
Seating is the interesting bit. It appears I've been assigned 2F (which was actually the best of what was available).
Currently the curtain is between 3 and 4 but I have a feeling it might be moved soon.
Still can't believe I was invited to call an 'upgrade line' then told (1) I shouldn't be calling, (2) we're only doing this upgrade as a favour since ba.com wouldn't process it, but (3) we won't take your payment since you aren't meant to do this over the phone, you'll "have to queue up at the terminal".
