When you throw in the fare to/from HNL, it won't save you much, if anything. The Australian government is VERY protective of Qantas and keeps capacity on most routes to/from Oz sufficiently low to keep all fares up.
I just did a similar search for a friend (SEA-SYD) using advice from this thread and using NW+JQ going through HNL saved him about $500 over one itinerary. The only drawback was that he would be forced to do overnights in HNL on both ends, but he saw that as a positive thing.
