I was able to call UA twice and each time I told them I wanted it booked on UA metal but with the LH # for it, and both times they did it for me no problem 85$ cheaper.

Sometimes it is best to book the codeshares, but if you plan on upgrading the UA segment booked as a LH it is day of, luckily mine were S so I didn't care.

I did just book a ticket from WAS-DEL UA wanted 984$ for an S class, 1184$ for W, just decided to buy the same flights through Swiss, so same UA equipment but Swiss booked it as an E class which UA said was upgradable day of the flight and it only cost $1024, so sometimes booking that way can be beneficial if you don't care about the chance upgrades won't clear.
When you call UA to change it, did you place the PNR on hold, call the web helpdesk to change it? Did you get hit with a phone reservation fee? Thanks.
