Currently stay plans are:

1 night - Booked as 5000pt Points Break.

2 night - Paid stay (which should earn enough to reach platinum status)

Her Questions:

1. If she books the points break would she still only need to *earn* another 4500 this year for platinum?
(Or would this have risen to 9500 in order to *reach* 60,000?)

2. If it would rise, could she just buy 5000 points now to reach platinum?

3. How long would her account need to be above 60k to trigger the plat card being sent before she could book the pointbreak?

She is not an extensive hotel stayer and not really that fussed about when she gets status, perfers to pay the best available price, etc.
However the thought of needing to earn an extra 5k just because of the order of her stays is not acceptable to her.

Any advice/confirmation from people who have used purchased miles for status then redeemed would be appreciated.

In the example you provided she would achieve platinum status after the stay posted. She could then print off a temporary platinum card from the website.

exactly- points earned/bought all count for status level doesn't matter if they are redeemed
