I've had no complaints at my treatment by UA during irregular operations. UA has even bumped pax off an oversold flight at time of boarding for me (without my asking) when I needed to be rerouted due to weather.

Redemption rates are higher, but more than offset by higher earning depending on travel patterns.

If the OP is already in first, upgrades are irrelevant.
