I've also experienced flitting cost-per-leg quotes while using UA Connection. I've learned to ignore it and continue through the booking process. If you've already priced out a trip knowing that the low fare really exists, it'll price out that way once you click the yellow "selection" button.

Sometimes you'll also see the exact same flights as lower-priced alternatives. Go figger!
