What I didnt mention in the original post is that a lot of the meetings don't apply to me; with google calendar I can set it up as a separate calendar and delete the entire thing if I want to after I'm done. I don't think I can do this with Outlook..or am I mistaken?
You can create additional calendars in Outlook 2003, but unfortunately you can't share them (you can only share the primary calendar). So it sounds as if Google will still work out best for you.
