This is indeed interesting, and it is far from simple.

The OP, for instance, would, according to the rules posted here, be entitled to PC for the intra-EU separate PNR flights if the OP were flying TATL on SkyTeam. Since the OP is flying AA across the pond, this is not the case.

Whatever is printed on the ticket (if anything!) is only half the story.
