Two sides to every story
While I understand your pain about being forced to stay overnight in YUL and understand this doesn't apply directly to yourself, but I have been on the "plane" waiting for people making connections.
Several times (and most often flying domestically in the US) we have been boarded on time, only to wait 15-30 minutes on the plane waiting for some passenger that thought they could make the 45 minute connection or get through security faster than the rest of us. As we sit there on the tarmac with the door open waiting for these "late connecting" passengers, I watch my connection time in the next city ticking away. I have missed connections because of this.
Yes it would have been nice if the YVR bound pilot had waited, (it would have been better if your pilot had been properly directed to the correct gate!!!!) but I bet those passengers who had tight connections to Asia were happy he didn't.
