If immigration and customs goes fast enough, then you stand a good chance that you could actually get onto the earlier United flight.

This is assuming that you are travelling on a regular paid ticket without any endorsement restrictions, and not an award ticket.

Just go to the UA check-in counter and ask them to put you on their flight.
