I used to have a multiple-entry tourist visa in the late 1980s before the U.S. and Japan came to a visa waiver agreement, and the only difference from my previous single-entry tourist visas was that I no longer had to apply to the consulate before every trip.

I still had to fill out the cards on the plane and go through the non-Japanese line at Narita.
