The other negative is that once you check-in, you can't change your existing coach seat assignment. If I have a bad seat in Y on a route where the upgrade is usually hard, I'll not check in, admittedly diminishing my upgrade chances, but ready to pounce on the decent to great seats that often seem to open up 8, 6, 4, 3 hours before departure.
