It was partially luck that the OP did not have to switch planes. During the evening international rushes at IAD and ORD, any number of arriving 767s and 777s could operate any European or South American route, and frequently, operations switches the exact aircraft assignments at the last minute.

This is to say, don't expect to not have to switch planes the next time you fly LAX-IAD-CDG on a 777.
