We once had a waiter - from Alsace-Lorraine, it turned out - tell us the soup of the day was "Garbage soup." I did a spit-take with my wine!

"What did you say?" I asked increduously.

"Garbage soup" he repeated.

"I'm sorry, but I could swear you just said 'Garbage soup'. Would you mind spelling that for me, please?"

He looked at me like I was a fair dinkum idiot, and said "C-A-B-B-A-G-E soup. Garbage soup. Now do you understand?"

And we just laughed and laughed and said "No thank you. Sounds delicious, but we'll pass."
