Last month I was on a flight leaving out of ORD from the "F" gates... upon arriving I noticed that the departure boards merely said "Delayed." I walked all the way to the gate to be told that there was a crew scheduling problem and that "we will provide an update in 1/2 hour, but to be safe check on the departure board in case there is an earlier update." So I walked over to the RCC in concourse B... 25 min later the departure boards still read "Delayed," but I thought I should walk all the way over to the gate just in case... and sure enough by the time I got there (exactly 1/2 hr later), they were almost finished with the boarding process!
