Quite true! Even abnormal ones, sometimes. In the spring of 2006 when I was working my way toward SE, Travelocity had a fare on CO from my city to MEX that was much better than anyone else's... if I'd gotten 100% EQMs I would have made SE on that trip, but since I only got 50%, I had to wait 2 more months!
Now, when I find a good fare on CO, I go to their web site, price it out and see what it'll cost me to get 100% EQMs. A lot of the time, the fares I'm being quoted are U fares anyway (due to not booking super far in advance), so the additional cost is often $0.
But for anything other than TATL nonstops from EWR, they're not as competitive.
