A day in Oslo is not bad, there are plenty of things to do.

It all depends what you want to do; what you want to see but here are two suggestions.

Firstly, a return ticket on the Express is NOK320, or half that if you are a student.

Take the train to Nationaltheateret, that train runs every 20 minutes towards Oslo and will take 22 minutes to the station. Get off there and walk to the National Gallery - this is free. Cross the park and buy a coffee at Bocata, a small but nice coffee shop. From here you can walk between the Parliament and the Palace. If you are interested in literature, I would cross down from the Parliament towards the road with the tram line. Eat lunch at Pascal, a brassiere and patisserie for about NOK200 which will give you a main and a very good dessert. Expect about 100 more for soft drinks and a class of wine. When done there, go to the Henrik Ibsens museum 20 meters down the road and experience how he lived.

When this is done, if you have more time, I would venture down to the water front and maybe see the fortress. Alternatively, you could easily spend your time around the fortress with its museum and old town square. Quaint and charming but something you will find in most European cities.

My other thing to do would be to get the train to the Central Station (every 10 minutes) - get a local train out to Blommenholm and go to the Henie-Onstad museum. Eat lunch at trendy Bølgen&Moi and just watch the sea life for the remainder of the time. If you like a more local thing then this is the option.

Of course you could go up to the Holmenkollen ski museum but it will take you a good 2-2.5 hours. It will give you the most amazing views of the city and surrounding areas. The tower is set to get torn down so you won't have much time to experience one of the world's most iconic sport arenas.

This should probably be moved to the Scandinavian forum, no?
