A groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the Chandler Hilton was the first for a large full-service hotel in the city since Elevation Chandler started construction in 2005.

Officials grabbed shovels and turned dirt for a six-story, 197-room Hilton on the southeastern corner of Frye Road and Loop 101 - across the freeway from the now-stalled Elevation project.

"Hilton is very particular," said Mark VanAmerongen, vice president at Texas Western Hospitality Leadership, the Dallas-based owner of the Chandler Hilton franchise.

For those not familiar, Chandler is in the SE part of the metro Phoenix area. This particular property will be near the Chandler Mall, close to where the AZ Loop 101 (Price) and AZ Loop 202 (Santan) meet. It is one of several Hilton-branded properties being built in that area.
