China Airlines has a dismal safety record, and that's an understatement.
Are you sure they don't avoid China Airlines because it's... ahem... a Chinese Airline?

Yes -- my significant other already advised me not to fly China Airlines on my next trip to Nanjing. But I'm not sure if China Eastern or similar airlines would be a better choice. People react so quickly to isolated occurrences. "My neighbor's Volvo broke down, so I won't buy a Volvo"...

As far as I know China Airlines has improved it's record significantly over the last few years. And safety standards can be changed rather quickly. Taking into account the bad record before significant changes have been implemented won't give an up-to-date picture.
