But if you don't have a seat assignment after purchasing a coach ticket, and the seat map shows full, you are very definitely on an oversold flight.
You're confirmed on the flight. If everyone shows up, the airline will ask for volunteers. If they don't get enough volunteers, they will involuntarily bump people. (This is rare ... they usually get enough volunteers). If they involuntarily bump anyone, those with no seat assignment are the first to be bumped.
As always, excellent advice from you. I was basing my statement on loads that I saw in EF. I did a check of the first few non-stop flights FLL-ORD on 09/03, and saw coach inventory still available. In EF, I also saw openings in the seat map in the exit row.
