I used to live in Chantilly (right outside IAD) and when European friends would come they almost always needed Volunteers on that flight. Of course it was once per day and on the DC10. Now KLM flies it. Through DTW there is more than one flight per day so the passengers could be more spread out on the flights than all having to be on one.
Your challenge might actually be getting to DTW.
Miles, as well as the fact IAD is a lot further for us than DCA (say about 2.5 times further). I could do IAD one way but doing it both ways will have my wife and kids a couple of hundred miles short of Platt. Mixinf IAD and DCA doesn't work and IAD-DTW is not ideal either as you get stuck on a CRJ.
Did NW ever do AMS-IAD? KLM has been doing AMS-IAD as far back as I can remember. There was a time when KLM did BWI-AMS too, which I took a few times.
